MP recently spoke with Manna Kadar about the best ways to approach giving oneself a makeover. Kadar is Founder & CEO of Manna Kadar Beauty, which houses Manna Kadar Cosmetics and others.
MP: How do you define makeover?
MK: I consider a makeover an “update.” Everyone needs a minor update every once in a while.
Should people practice continual or periodical makeovers?
I like to practice continual makeovers. Thanks to social media, styles and trends are changing daily, making it easier to try something new whenever you feel like it.
Are makeovers something you’d consider an effective practice of self-care?
I would consider a makeover a part of the self-care practice. Self-care is all about taking care of yourself and feeling good. When you know you look good, you automatically feel good. So, the ultimate goal of self-care is to do something that makes you feel better about yourself.
How do you know when it’s time to give yourself a makeover?
Whenever I feel like I need a slight change in my life, I try something new. It may be just a different lipstick color. I think sometimes people get used to wearing the same clothes and makeup because it’s easy.
Do makeovers have to be extreme changes to one’s look?
Absolutely not. I think you can make small changes to update your look and get the same excitement. I like to make subtle changes and keep things fresh and updated throughout the year.
Some people are afraid of even small changes in their appearances or their daily routines. What are some tips and tricks that can help them change their look over time?
I always recommend starting with something small and seeing how you feel about it. If you want to change your eye look, add some faux lashes. If you want to update your brow look, try a new brow pencil or gel.
What should people aim for when giving themselves a makeover?
Keep it simple. What is it that you keep thinking about changing in your routine? Start with that first.
What is the most logical way to give yourself a makeover?
I believe that less is more. Don’t do anything drastic. Focus on one thing you want to update first.
How can you determine whether a particular makeover is right for you before going through the process of getting the makeover?
There are tons of apps where you can play around with different makeup and hair color/styles by just uploading a picture of yourself to try something new before you commit.
How can you give yourself a makeover that enables you to have two different looks?
I recommend starting with a new day look, something that you feel comfortable enough to wear during the day. Then add pieces to create an evening look. A straight hair day look can easily be turned into a beautiful updo with a rubber band and a few bobby pins. A neutral lip can be changed into a sultry evening look with a glittery lipstick topper. A basic eye shadow can turn smokey by adding a dark shadow to the eye crease.
Makeovers often require new things, which are often expensive. How can you give yourself a makeover without spending too much money until you fully commit to the look?
Many drugstore brands are just as fabulous as prestige. With a quick search on the internet, you can find product dupes that people suggest working just as well as the expensive ones.
What are some of the benefits of giving yourself a makeover?
The number one benefit is doing something for yourself! We all spend so much time doing things that don’t necessarily benefit us. Doing something that makes you feel better about yourself is the ultimate gift you can give.
What are some of the downfalls associated with giving yourself a makeover?
The nice thing about giving yourself a makeover is makeup washes right off if you don’t like it, and you can try a new hairstyle without having to commit to a new cut or color your hair. There are no downfalls, so go out and try something new now!
